This study xamines how inequality in the age of automated algorithms extends into spatial contexts and raises new questions about publicness and public spaces. Using Hannah Arendt’s concept of the “space of appearance” as a theoretical framework, it explores publicness as a condition that allows individuals to appear before others and participate in a shared world. This study analyzes how digital technologies and automated algorithms preemptively and invisibly shape the conditions of appearance, thereby intervening in the foundation of publicness. It further argues that key issues in artificial intelligence (AI) ethics—such as bias, surveillance, and opacity—are inseparable from the question of publicness and calls for expanding AI ethics to engage more deeply with its public dimensions. The study concludes by suggesting directions for future research on publicness in the age of AI. |
