This study analyzed the types of conceptual metaphors for artificial intelligence(AI) and their distributional patterns over time in news texts from major Korean daily newspapers published between 2022 and June 2025. The findings revealed a distinct trajectory in Korean media discourse on AI, moving from an initial phase of technological shock and enthusiasm to a phase of social backlash and fear triggered by adverse effects such as deepfakes, and more recently, to a phase characterized by pragmatic adjustment and instrumental internalization. Differences were also observed across newspaper outlets. Conservative-leaning newspapers tended to emphasize AI as a driving force for industrial transformation, framing it in terms of "revolution" and "power," whereas progressive-leaning newspapers were more likely to portray AI as a cooperative "partner." The patterns of conceptualizing AI were categorized into three dimensions: AI as an instrumental object and macro-level driving force, AI as a social agent and personified entity, and AI as an antagonistic other and potential threat. This study is significant because it moves beyond identifying metaphorical patterns at a single point in time and examines how the conceptualization of AI in newspaper discourse has evolved and the characteristics of this evolution. |
