This article examines how high-level AI translation tools are reshaping the translation experiences of East Asian scholars studying Western texts, and explores the educational implications from a new materialist perspective. While AI translation remains error-prone, it greatly improves the efficiency of draft translation and reduces the mystique surrounding Western texts, enabling translation beyond semantic equivalence as correspondence—a responsive engagement with the materiality of words. Using Tim Ingold’s notion of correspondence and drawing on Spivak’s politics of translation, the article frames translation as intimate reading and a practice of self-transformation that responds to rhetorical and ethical alterity. It ultimately suggests that AI translation should be approached not merely as an instrument for accuracy, but as a mediator of word-matter that expands the educational dimension of reading through renewed encounters with unfamiliar concepts. |
