This study seeks to answer the question: “In the age of Big Data, what kind of privacy should we protect, and how can we protect it?” Carissa Véliz’s theory of privacy provides a practical ethics that responds to surveillance capitalism, effectively analyzing the asymmetric power structure of data. However, her theory does not fully account for the ontological dimension through which technology participates in the formation of human identity. To address this limitation, this paper draws on Luciano Floridi’s philosophy of information, interpreting technology as a mediating condition that constitutes and transforms human identity. From this perspective, privacy can be redefined not merely as a right to protect information, but as an ethical relation through which the human self is interpreted and constituted within technology. By reconstructing Véliz’s ethics around the notion of identity, this study proposes that the protection of privacy is also an ethical practice of protecting and shaping identity. This research is significant for reframing privacy from an issue of individual control to one of human-technology identity formation. While future studies should address the social and institutional dimensions of identity, including the responsibilities of designers, platforms, and technological systems.
