Abstract

Since the official launch of PAPAGO, an AI-based interpretation and translation service provided by Naver in July 2017, the use of machine translation for non-literary texts has been widespread and machine translation has been commercialized in the translation industry. Conducted in the era of AI, this study aims to compare and analyze human-translated and neural machine translation (NMT) solution-translated texts and to analyze factors that result in differences between human and AI translation. Thus, essay literature was selected for translation and four texts translated by humans and one text translated by AI were compared and analyzed. For machine translation, the study used a self-developed Translation Module utilizing PAPAGO. The analytic results are different from those of other studies and demonstrate that machine translation cannot be compared to human translation. Given the translator’s position is threatened by NMT solutions capable of learning rapidly and coexistence between humans and machines, this study is considered useful for furthering discussions on the future directions of human translation.
