Abstract
This study explores the effect of emerging generative artificial intelligence (AI) technology in transforming the nature of artistic activities and the direction of art education. The three research questions posed for this purpose are as follows: (i) What are the characteristics of generative AI technology and how do they affect artistic activities and art education? (ii) What are the specific cases and features of generative AI technology that assist artistic activities? (iii) How will art education change with the advent of generative AI? The core conclusions based on these research questions are as follows: First, the use of AI image generators can broaden the scope of creation and facilitate the visualization of various ideas. However, dependency may inhibit the development of creative thinking and personal emotional expression. Second, generative AI technology can have an overwhelming effect on various fields of computer graphics in the future; however, the final image selection and quality judgement will require the aesthetic discretion or expertise of the user. Third, generative AI technology has the potential to transcend the boundaries between fine and applied art. However, it is necessary to also consider the side effects of the popularization of AI technology on education. The discussion presented in this paper is likely to stimulate active academic discourse on the impact of rapidly emerging AI technologies on artistic activities and art education. |
