<Abstract>

The purpose of this paper is to examine a new way of accepting digital media art based on Böhme’s aisthetik. Interaction is one of the important characteristics of digital media art. Nevertheless, previous discussions on digital media mostly focused on technical interaction. In particular, although media-aisthetik is an aisthetik centered on emotional perception (aisthesis), questions concerning perception (aisthesis) and its subject have been belittled. Excluding the technical interaction, other types of interaction have not been noted. A narrow perspective on the acceptance of digital media art has been adopted. Another emotional approach is needed to overcome these limitations. That is just Böhme’s aisthetik.

Böhme argues thant aisthetik is a general theory of perception. The concept of atmosphere is essential in his theory. It’s most important to be aware of the atmosphere. His aisthetik of atmosphere is applicable to not only art but also nature, environment, design and products, all of which formulate a spatial atmosphere. Above all, in relation to the atmosphere, he notes the space with the atmosphere and the body perceiving the atmosphere in the space. In that Böhme’s aisthetik is worth utilizing as a new theoretical frame for interpreting digital media art, this paper describes his aisthetik and demonstrates how to interpret digital media art based on the aisthetik.
