Abstract
The primary objective of this study is to examine the manner in which intentionalism can provide answers to the question of whether intentionalist interpretation can be applied to the interpretation of artificial intelligence (AI) art (intentionalist question regarding AI art, IQA). Intentionalism is a thesis within the philosophy of criticism that asserts that the meaning of an artwork is determined by an artistʼs intention. I argue that, for intentionalism to ultimately respond to IQA and advocate for intentionalism in the face of its challenges, intentionalists must accept that “AI itself” can possess artistic intentions and should be able to present a more advanced explanation for the interpretation of AI art. Exploring IQA can serve not only as a bottom-up approach to investigate fundamental questions in the philosophy of AI but also as a new impetus within the longstanding debate of intentionalism versus anti-intentionalism in the philosophy of criticism. |
