<Abstract>

It has been known that the characteristics of artificial intelligence (AI) speakers affect the relationship between AI speakers and users, and usage patterns. The present study investigates the effects of gender of AI speaker on user response when meditating using AI speaker. 40 participants perform two mindfulness breathing meditation sessions using AI speakers of female and male voices. Questionnaires are administered to explore the effectiveness of mindfulness meditation, and evaluate the AI speaker. Participants report that the male AI speaker is more social, and that a higher level of social presence is felt for male AI speaker. Mindfulness meditation using AI speaker reduces anxiety and depression, and improves mindfulness meditation skills. These findings suggest that mindfulness meditation using AI speakers has a positive effect on mental health. This study confirms the role of AI speaker gender in perception of users’ meditation and directs future research into users sexual stereotypes and ages, and AI speakers’ voice characteristics.
